Two words I've only read and never heard and thus don't really know how to properly pronounce: 1. Sapelle (SAH-pell? SAH-pell-E <--long E? SAY-pell(-E)? ) 2. Gotoh (GO-TOO? GOT-oh? GO-toe?) Don't want to sound like a doofus when I'm hanging out at the guitar shop

I have heard Sapele pronounced Sa Peal lay and Imbia Im by ya but than I hear toe mot toe and sometimes my wife says I don't hear a darn thing go figure john hall |

How about Bourgeois Guitars? I was on the phone a couple of years back talking to Dave Skowron and pronounced it Borgeous, like Gorgeous with a B! He thought I was talking about Julius Borges and then corrected me with the proper pronunciation of Danas last name "Boosh-waa" DHO!

How about this one. Not guitar related but fun nonetheless. CWM.It's a Welsh word refering to a flat spot on a mountain. Sentence: the Western Cwm of Everest is where we set up camp 4. |

Ah, at last a thread that I feel I can comment on. Occasionally my degrees in Linguistics come in handy, but only occasionally. Gotoh -- correct on the 'go toe' pronunciation. Japanese does not have syllabic stress the way English does, however, so both syllables are stressed equally. Sapelle (more commonly Sapele) -- Since the wood comes from West Africa, I would assume the word does too. When I don't know how a word is pronounced, I always pronounce it using the International Phonetic Alphabet's (IPA) conventions. In this case, I would pronounce it 'sah pel eh' with accent on the second syllable. And CWM is a good one. Celtic languages are extremely difficult to figure out the pronunciation for because they're spelling conventions are just so, erm, odd. One giveaway, though is the 'W'. Think double-U and you'll get it. I've seen English (maybe Welsh?) surnames with the 'W' used as a substitue for 'U' or 'OO'. Flwte (pronounced "flute" or perhaps "flutie"), for example. So I'm really Don Ooilliams? Gee, you'd think being primarily of Welsh heritage, my father would have taught me some of the language...but NO-oooooo! Of course, he doesn't know it either...so it would have been difficult for him. |

Right Serge - the guitars say " Come and play with me" ad if you show up at home with one , the wife says "you cant play with me no more - get out. Maybe you could tranlsate that back into french for us !!! |
